چکیده

This work explores the effect of surface modification of stainless steel with a carbon nitride (CNx) film, under sliding wear of the UHMWPE/steel. Wettatibility of CNx coatings is assessed by means of the sessile drop method using two different liquid media. Microhardness and stiffness of CNx coatings are estimated by depth-sensing indentation. The sliding performance of UHMWPE against stainless steel and CNx was evaluated using a pin on disk tribometer. It is demonstrated that CNx surface properties are quite different from those of stainless steel, with a concomitant substantial reduction of the coefficient of friction of UHMWPE/CNx in comparison with the one of UHMWPE/steel under sliding conditions. Even tough imposed sliding conditions do not conduct to wear mass loss in UHMWPE, wear track patterns against steel and CNx are quite different. © 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Wear of materials used for artificial joints in total hip replacements

Two tribological pairs used for artificial joints were studied. Wear tests were performed in a pin-on-disc type machine modified to allow lubrication ith bovine serum. The pins were made of either AISI F138 stainless steel or ASTM F136 titanium alloy, while the discs were manufactured with ltra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The tested pairs were ASTM F138 stainless steel–UHMWPE a...

Wear of retrieved UHMWPE hip liners.

After the gamma-irradiation sterilization, the most widely used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material for the total joint replacement, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), degrades through the progressive in vivo oxidation. The oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to reduction of its mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of the in vivo post-ir...

Quantitative comparison of wear debris from UHMWPE that has and has not been sterilised by gamma irradiation.

Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) components for total joint replacement generate wear particles which cause adverse biological tissue reactions leading to osteolysis and loosening. Sterilisation of UHMWPE components by gamma irradiation in air causes chain scissions which initiate a long-term oxidative process that degrades the chemical and mechanical properties of the polyethy...

Friction and wear behaviours of medical grade UHMWPE at dry and lubricated conditions

In this investigation the friction and wear performance of GUR 1020 medical grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) polymer under dry sliding, distilled water and egg albumen lubrication conditions were evaluated. The sliding experiments were carried out on a pin-on-disc tribometer. The contact configuration used was a polymer pin on a rotating AISI 304L stainless steel disc. We...

The friction and wear performance of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) and pure poly-ether-etherketone(PEEK) polymers were comparatively evaluated under dry sliding and cacao drops lubrication. The sliding experiments were carried out on a pin-on-disc tribometer. The contact configuration used was a polymer pin on a rotating stainless steel disc. Wear tests were carried out at ro...
